NP Durmitor. Top of Stožina.

The peak of Stožina is located on the territory of the Durmitor National Park above the Pošćenska dolina. This is far from the highest point of Durmitor, however, due to its picturesqueness, it has become one of the symbols of the national park and one of the most frequently photographed peaks. It is called the gateway to South Durmitor.

10 reasons to rent a car in Montenegro.

1. SAVE TIME

If you have cars, then you don’t have to go to the bus station, buy tickets, wait for departure, put up with bus delays, make transfers, stop regularly on the way to pick up or drop off passengers and spend several minutes waiting at each bus station.

The bus will take you only to the bus station, and by car you can not only get to the city, but also move around inside it and instead of walking for a long time, get to the sights of interest in five minutes.
All this saves a lot of time, which a tourist never has much.

2. FREEDOM

Traveling on your own by car, rather than using public transport or with an organized tour, you have much more freedom.

You do not depend on anyone and you can change the plan at any time. Because the weather has deteriorated or, on the contrary, improved. Or you liked that pretty town by the sea, you need to see what is cool in it. Or the place turned out to be less interesting than you expected.

I'm not talking about the fact that when you travel by car, no one will forbid you to stop at least every few meters to take a picture of the landscape you like, drink coffee in a pretty cafe with a terrace on the seashore, or just look at all sorts of interesting things.

3. ABILITY TO SEE MORE

The third point follows logically from the first two. You can see more, implement a richer program, as you are freer in movement and have more time.

In general, for me, a car is primarily a tool that allows you to see the maximum in a short time. Having a personal vehicle makes it possible to create interesting routes with visits to several settlements or sights (say, arrange a one-day tour of the fortresses), which, unfortunately, is not feasible in public transport.
Traveling by car, you can really see many times more.

4. CHANCE TO MAKE YOUR HOLIDAY TRULY UNIQUE

In Montenegro, there are very beautiful and interesting, but not very accessible places. Getting to them by bus is either difficult or impossible. And not everyone likes long walks, especially in the heat.
The car will allow you to see the sights that other visitors miss, and bring photos and impressions from your vacation that are different from those of the vast majority of tourists.

For example, you can visit the same Austro-Hungarian fortresses (Gorazda near Kotor, Kosmac above Budva, Vrmac on the peninsula of the same name, Lustica fortresses) or observation platforms from which amazing views open (Iljino brdo near Herceg Novi), go to authentic villages (Zliebi over Herceg Novi, Gornja Lastva in the Tivat area, Karuc and Godinje on Lake Skadar) and get to know non-tourist Montenegro.

5. COMFORT

You ride in great comfort.
You control the temperature in your cabin.
You have the opportunity to move within the city not on foot, but quickly and comfortably by car, so you get much less tired.
And for travelers with small children, a car is an indispensable friend and helper. In it, a child can be fed, put to sleep, changed clothes or stop at any time for all this.

6. EASE OF RENTING A CAR

In Montenegro, the procedure for registering a car for rent is extremely simple. You don't even need an international driver's license, a regular (national) driver's license is enough.
For many, it will also be a plus that most Montenegrin distributors prefer to take a deposit in cash rather than write off from a card, and, as a rule, the amount of the deposit is not too large. In some cases, a deposit is not asked at all.

In addition, if you choose the Localrent site, in general, the entire rental process will become very easy: the site’s search engine will sort out the offers of many Montenegrin car rental companies by price, you can book the option you like in just a couple of minutes (and you will need to pay not the entire amount, but only a small part of it), you will not face hidden fees and commissions and will not hear traditional excuses when receiving a car why you were delivered not the car that you ordered, but another one, since you will pick up exactly the car that you booked on the site. Among other things, the company is famous for its friendly and always ready to advise (and not only on rental issues) support service.

7. SAVE MONEY

Not always and not for everyone, but still sometimes it’s cheaper to drive a car. Especially if you are not traveling alone, but three or four of us over long distances or use difficult routes.

For example: for 4 adults (or adults with children over 9 years old) a bus trip from Herceg Novi to Bar will cost about 80 € (8.5 € road to Bar + 9.5 € return ticket + 2 € bus station taxes = 20 €, multiply by 4 - it comes out to 80 €), and by car this pleasure will cost about 55 € (30 € car rental + 16 € gasoline + 9 € ferry) if you use the Kamenari-Lepetane ferry and about 49 €, provided that the route will be laid through Kotor and the Vrmac tunnel.
In the off-season, when cars are offered at lower prices, you can spend even less on the road - 30-38 €, despite the fact that the price of bus tickets remains the same. The benefit is obvious.

8. NO RESTRICTIONS IN THE CHOICE OF HOUSING

If you plan to travel on foot and by public transport for the entire vacation, the selection of apartments, houses, hotels becomes significantly smaller.

For the most comfortable stay, you have to look for housing located close to the sea, or to the city center / bus station. Namely, in these areas, good options at a low cost are sorted out very in advance.
As a result, you most likely either overpay or agree to a cheaper offer, and then put up with some of the ensuing inconvenience.

When you know for sure that you will take a car for the entire stay in Montenegro, or at least most of it, it becomes possible to consider housing in more remote areas, quiet and cheap.

9. THE PRESENCE OF A TRUNK

Having a car, it is permissible to take much more with you, since these things will not necessarily be carried by yourself.
For photographers, this might be a large tripod, a reflector, flashes, and a couple of extra lenses; for beachgoers, sun umbrellas, air mattresses, boats, circles, a cooler bag; for parents with a small child - a stroller, a baby food warmer, a change of clothes, favorite toys, hygiene products.

Plus, you can always safely buy something for souvenirs and gifts on the road. When you travel by public transport it is not very convenient to buy something voluminous, fragile or more or less heavy, because then you have to wear it for the rest of the way. If you have a car, then you need to bring everything to the parking lot as much as possible.

10. THE ABILITY TO CHOOSE THE BEST PLACES TO STAY

Montenegro has different beaches: concrete, large and small pebble, less often sandy. And sometimes, before descending into the sea, there are even steep rocky shores. Without a means of transportation, you usually have to be content with what is nearby. With a car, it will become very easy to find exactly the type of beach that you like.
Or just find a deserted place with clear turquoise sea water. On a wild beach in Montenegro

And also, having a car, you can add picnics in beautiful locations with panoramic views, sunset trips to observation platforms or dinners in small cute restaurants located on the outskirts and suburbs to your vacation plan.
